No one wants to think about a beloved pet getting lost or running away, but it happens quite frequently. One of the best ways to increase your chances of finding your pet is by making sure he or she wears a pet ID at all times. In an effort to raise awareness about the importance of pet identification, April 9-15th is National Pet ID Week. Check out these tips to help keep your pet safe.
1. Make Sure Your Pet Wears a Pet ID Collar
If your cat or dog does not wear a collar, changing that could be very helpful if he or she ever gets lost. In general, you should have your pet wear a collar with identification tags as well as any applicable rabies or license tags.
2. Include Enough Information on Pet ID Tags
Do not simply put your pet's name on his or her pet ID tag. Instead, make sure that it includes a contact name, phone number and address. Another helpful tip is to include your name so that whoever finds your pet knows who to look for.
3. Keep Your Pet's Microchip Current
Microchips are another great way to make it easier to identify your pet if you cannot find him or her. With that said, you need to keep them current. If your cat or dog has a microchip and it has been a few years, double-check with your vet to ensure all information is still up-to-date.
4. Take Extra Pet ID Precautions When Traveling
When you travel, extra precautions are necessary to prevent your pet from getting lost. For example, put an additional tag on your pet with the contact information of a close friend, family member or someone else who knows how to contact you.
National Pet ID Week is the perfect opportunity to update your pet's identification. Schedule an appointment at Pet Hospitals of Hawaii for an annual check-up and to ask about microchipping.
