Celebrate Pet Adoption on National Mutt Day

The word mutt, or poi dog in Hawaii, refers to mixed breed dogs. December 2 is a day set aside especially to celebrate these unique pups. Spreading love for mixed breed dogs is such a big deal that this day is also recognized a second time in the summer, usually during July.

Why Celebrate Mutts?

While purebred dogs are often bought and sold by private breeders and sought after for the signature traits of their respective breeds, mixed breed dogs make up the majority of dogs residing in shelters. There is a lot to love about mixed breeds, from greater resistance to common health problems to one-of-a-kind features that make them truly unique.

Since they are not in high demand like purebred animals, mutts sometimes need a little extra help to get adopted. Whether you or someone you know is considering bringing a dog into their family, adoption from a shelter is one option you should consider.

Is Dog Adoption Right for You?

Adopting a pet can be much more affordable than buying a dog from a breeder. That being said, adopting comes with its own challenges, especially if the dog requires training and extra attention after adoption. Some adopted dogs may have their own unique health concerns, and if you adopt a mixed breed puppy, they may grow to surprising sizes. Even with these concerns, mixed breed dogs are still a great option to consider.

Adopting a dog from a shelter allows you to do a good deed while finding a new furry best friend that fits in just right with your family. Puppies can be fun, but they can also be very destructive and need a lot of attention. Adopting an adult dog from a shelter allows you to skip to a calmer phase of a dog's lifespan. Some shelter dogs may even know some basic commands upon adoption. In general, mutts are just as trainable and have similar skills to any purebred dog. Adopting a dog saves the lives of other animals that will need the shelter's services down the road.
