In the hustle and bustle of modern life, it can sometimes be difficult to take stock of and appreciate nature and our beautiful surroundings, and in particular, recognize the supreme importance of conservation and related environmental efforts. That's what National Wildlife Day is for! Sept. 4 is a great time to take stock of the state of the planet, become a little more knowledgeable about endangered animal species, help to raise awareness about necessary and urgent conservation efforts, and broadly do your part to support a healthy and diverse biosphere on this planet.
National Wildlife Day was created in 2005 as a way to raise awareness about globally endangered species and simultaneously highlight the wide variety of conservation efforts happening around the world. The Earth hosts an astoundingly diverse array of beautiful and exotic wildlife, but for a variety of reasons, that is currently changing. In fact, many biologists believe we are currently living through the sixth mass extinction, largely brought about through human activity. Our actions and behavior include an expanding human population, deforestation, industrialization, the pollution of oceans and forests, over-fishing, meat consumption, and several other interrelated causes.
National Wildlife Day reminds us of the importance of preserving our beautiful planet and all of its inhabitants and moreover that it is our responsibility to do so.
There are many ways to be an active participant in National Wildlife Day! Options include the following (and more — feel free to get creative!):
• Donate money to a national or international conservation-oriented organization
• Visit your local zoo
• Plan an event at a local animal sanctuary
• Work to spread awareness of the importance of conservation in your community through conversations and talks at local libraries, community centers, and schools
• Promote World Wildlife Day and associated causes on social media
Care for wildlife also means care for the animals who live in your home. Pet Hospitals of Hawaii offers a variety of veterinary and wellness services for your pets. Contact us today to learn how we can help your animals live their best lives!
