Before we had automobiles, horses were the main form of transportation. In fact, in pre-machinery times, horses were a crucial part of the U.S. industry. To recognize the significance of horses in U.S. history and the critical roles they play today, we celebrate the National Day of the Horse.
The National Day of the Horse was officially recognized in 2004. Congress created the holiday to draw attention to horses' indispensable role in helping the country flourish.
The National Day of the Horse is on Dec. 13. In 2021, that is a Monday.
Horses may not be an everyday part of modern life, but they made today's way of life possible. In fact, horses have been helping humans form societies for thousands of years.
Before construction equipment, humans relied on livestock such as horses to move lumber and stone. Without their strength and agility, ancient monuments would've never been built.
Western movies would not be the same without horses. Even today, cowboys and horses are inseparable.
If you love horses or just want to show your appreciation, you can participate in National Day of the Horse. There are many ways to observe it, so you can find one that fits your schedule and budget.
There are plenty of charities that rescue horses and organize for their well-being. Donating is an easy way to contribute to the cause.
Do you have a horse movie that you love? If so, today is a great time to watch it. If you don't have a favorite, we recommend the following:
• "National Velvet"
• "Black Beauty"
• "Seabiscuit"
