Bunnies are popular pets around Easter, but these little furry creatures are prey and have natural instincts that make them difficult to understand. In honor of National Bunny Day on September 25, here are some fun things to know about bunnies.
Bunnies are happiest when they have a partner. The best combination is a male and female who are both neutered. Your bunny may be unhappy when alone. It used to be thought that a guinea pig would be a comparable companion because the two animals are about the same size. Now, most experts would recommend keeping the two species apart. Their diets are different, and they cannot communicate. Bunnies can also easily injure guinea pigs.
Carrots are too high in sugar for bunnies to have too many of them. Instead, it is important for a bunny to have a diet rich in good-quality hay. Pellets and leafy greens are only supplements, and it is important to know that lawnmower clippings can upset a rabbit’s stomach. A good diet that also includes a lot of water will prevent many health problems in bunnies.
Baby bunnies need to move around to strengthen their bones and muscles, and adult rabbits love to have fun, but you should not leave them unattended. Therefore, bunnies need large enclosures, supervised time outside the cage, and plenty of toys to play with. Bunnies are also much smarter than many people give them credit for. They can be trained to go to the bathroom in a litter box and even learn to come when called.
In their natural habitat, bunnies are prey, so they are in a constant state of alert. A bunny can bite if you pick it up too quickly. How would you react if an eagle swooped down to pick you up? Remember their perspective when you have one as a pet.
If your bunny seems to be under the weather, make an appointment with Pet Hospitals of Hawaii to discuss the problem.
