Oct. 4 is World Animal Day, and there is no better time to learn about some of the animals you may not know much about — particularly in other parts of the world. United States

Almost 50 million households in the United States own at least one dog, which makes “man’s best friend” the most popular pet in the United States. Cats follow close behind, with approximately 31.9 million households having one or more. Fish come in third and can be found in approximately 1 million American households.

Europe

Like the United States, much of Europe prefers to keep cats and dogs as pets. Cats are the most common pet type, as revealed by statistics released in 2019. There are approximately 77.4 million cats throughout the European Union, while there are approximately 68.5 million dogs kept as pets. Next come ornamental birds, including parrots, canaries, parakeets, and doves. Europeans keep approximately 37.2 million ornamental birds as pets.

Australia

In Australia, dogs rule the pet world. Approximately 40% of Australian households have at least one dog. The most popular dog breeds in the country include the cavoodle (a cross between the Cavalier King Charles spaniel and the poodle), the Maltese Cross and the Labrador. Cats follow close behind, with approximately 27% of households owning at least one. Fish trail behind as third on the list and can be found in approximately 11% of Australian households.

India

Dogs seem to be the most preferred nonhuman companion in many parts of the world, and India is no exception. They are widely available and appreciated for their loyalty and protection. Cats are the second most popular pets in India, with Bengal and Persian cats being preferred over other breeds.

China

Pet popularity in China is on the rise, and dogs are now classified officially as pets instead of livestock. Despite this change, fish are currently the pet of choice in the country. Goldfish are particularly popular. There are approximately 220.5 million fish kept as pets, with cats coming in second as the most popular pet at approximately 171.2 million.
