National Beach Day is August 30. With the sun out and the waves gently lapping at the shore of beaches all around Hawaii, it’s a fantastic time to get outdoors with your companion and head to the beach for some fun! While there’s always the old standby of simply lounging on the beach with your dog, here are some other fun ideas to consider as well.
Some dog-friendly, fun activities might include:
• Digging: Dogs love to dig, so why not get down on the ground and show your pup how it’s done? The two of you can dig a few holes together, or you can build a sandcastle while your dog helpfully tromps it down.
• Treasure Hunting: Many beaches are full of little hidden treasures, such as oysters. Together, you might find a great stash to bring home. Teach your dog to sniff them out, then dig for them together.
• Playing Hide and Seek: Do you have another person with you for your beach adventure? Try hide and seek! Your partner can keep your dog’s eyes off you while you hide a toy in the sand, then let loose and encourage your fluffy friend to go hunting and dig it up.
The best part about all that digging is that, at the end of the beach day, you don’t need to worry about the mess you made of the ground. The water will smooth it all out for you.
Check on the beach you intend to go to, as some do not allow pets or may allow them but only at certain hours. Most require pets to remain leashed at all times, while some may allow otherwise. Dog-friendly beaches in Hawaii include Kailua Beach Park, Aukai Beach and Baldwin Beach Park. Here is a complete list provided by the Hawaiian Humane Society.
Be sure to also bring snacks for all the energy your dog will expend and, especially, water. Beach water is not drinkable, and your buddy will definitely need access to some that is.
In preparation for fun in the sun, be sure to schedule an appointment with us for a wellness exam and updated vaccinations. You only want your dog catching balls and flying discs on the beach, not germs!
