National Pet Week, Day 5: Safe Travels with Your Pet

For day 5 of National Pet Week, it is time to talk travel! As summer approaches, more families will be hitting the road or taking to the skies to vacation in all sorts of places. The furry members of the family deserve special consideration as to their well-being during travels, though, as they are especially vulnerable under the wrong conditions. Whether your transport will be by plane or car, here are three tips to keep your furry loved ones safe along the way.

1. Get a Vet Checkup

Making sure your pet is in fit shape to tolerate traveling is key. Verify your pet’s vaccines are current and have your vet do an exam.

Some airlines or lodging may also require proof of current vaccinations, especially for rabies. Pet boarding generally requires proof, too, including for Bordetella. It is a good idea to call in advance to find out what documentation is required, along with keeping copies in your wallet, briefcase, backpack, or purse.

2. Pack the Essentials

Depending on how long any driving will be, your pet may need you to stop periodically so you can offer him or her food and water. Keeping a pet kit nearby and handy with all your pet’s essentials will make those breaks fast and easy. Your kit should include food, water, bowls for each, an extra leash, and your pet’s medications. Optionally, add treats for good behavior, toys, wet wipes in case of messes and a harness for safer hiking.

If you are flying, the same essentials apply but will need to be handled in between the legs of the flight. In the meantime, the pet will need to be in a suitable carrier for the passenger area or in a sturdy, well-ventilated and properly labeled crate in cargo.

3. Plan with Your Pet in Mind

One point often repeated, and worth repeating again, is to never leave your pet alone in a vehicle. Even on cooler days, the sun beating down on a vehicle can heat it to sweltering temperatures. On truly cold days, your pet’s coat may be insufficient warmth. The easiest solution is to travel with at least one friend or family member who can be entrusted with your pet when you need to go into places.
