National Pet Week, Day 7: 4 Tips for Giving Your Pet a Lifetime of Love and Care

When you choose to add a pet to your family, you are also committing to giving that animal all the love and care it needs to live well. No matter what type of pet you open your home to, we at Pet Hospitals of Hawaii want to help you give it a lifetime of loving care with a few simple tips that may improve longevity, health, and quality of life.

1. Personalized Nutrition

What you choose to feed your pet can affect its health over time; however, the huge array of pet food choices can be confusing, especially if you are a first-time owner. From low-cost store brands to refrigerated and even prescription options, you can narrow your options by considering your pet's breed preferences and any existing health issues, including:

•       Chronic digestive upset

•       Skin or coat problems

•       Allergies

You can ask our experienced veterinarians about which food type might best suit your pet and how reading ingredient labels may also help you make the right choice. Foods that included by-products and other fillers may not offer your pet the proper nutrition it needs, which may curtail its energy and lead to fussiness and other eating problems.

2. Keep Your Pet Vaccinated

If you own a dog or cat, keeping its vaccinations current from puppy or kittenhood can protect it from several serious diseases that could shorten its life, such as distemper, parvovirus, and feline herpesvirus. Your young animal should have its first set of shots at around six to eight weeks and then have all of the recommended vaccines by the time it is 16 weeks old.

If you are unsure whether your puppy or kitten has all its vaccines, especially if you rescued it as a stray, you could consult with one of our veterinarians for advice, as an unvaccinated pet is more likely to contract a dangerous or even deadly disease.

3. Consistent Grooming

While most cats keep themselves clean, consistent, weekly brushing can keep long-haired breeds free of mats, especially during shedding season. This also gives you the opportunity to check for ear mites, fleas and ticks that could cause your pet extreme discomfort and also spread to other animals and people. Having your dog groomed professionally at least once a month can keep it looking, smelling, and feeling its best.

4. Regular Exercise

Daily play and exercise can help prevent obesity in your dog or cat. Keeping a collection of toys that stimulate the mind and keep the body lean can help offer your pet a longer, happier life.

Your pet depends on you to give it all the loving care it needs to feel its best and avoid preventable diseases. Contact one of our offices today to make an appointment and to learn more about how to keep your beloved companion healthy for a lifetime.
