Many people who want to get a pet consider adopting from the local Humane Society or animal shelters. There are usually many cute kittens and adorable puppies to choose from, but older cats and dogs are available for adoption also. While some people prefer to adopt a young animal, there are several benefits to adopting a senior pet.

Every year, millions of cats and dogs find their way into animal shelters. The idea behind having a National Adopt a Senior Pet Month is to raise awareness that many senior animals are waiting to be adopted and share the benefits of adopting older pets.
Some senior pets are in animal shelters because of bad or aggressive behavior, but there are many other reasons also. For example, their owners might have moved somewhere that pets are not allowed or passed away. Don’t assume that a senior pet is dangerous or not well behaved just because they’re in a shelter.
Benefits of Adopting a Senior Pet
Young pets can be adorable, but they also require lots of attention. They are also more likely to damage household items. Some of the reasons senior pets are desirable are:

• They do not need as much attention or supervision as young pets do and are not as likely to damage your furniture or your slippers.
• Their personalities are already developed, so you will know if their temperament will fit in with your family.
• Senior dogs may have been trained and can be calmer than puppies.
• Senior cats probably want to snuggle and are a good fit for busy households with children or other pets.
Sadly, many senior pets living in shelters are eventually euthanized. Adopting a senior pet can save a life.
