September is Happy Cat Month: How to Create an Enriching Environment

We are celebrating Happy Cat Month in September! This annual event focuses on helping you give your cats a happy, fulfilling, and joyful life. Each week, we are sharing information on how to care for your feline friends.

•       Week 1 – Happy Healthy Cat (September 1-5)

•       Week 2 – Happy Enriched Cat (September 6-12)

•       Week 3 – Happy Multi-Cat (September 13-19)

•       Week 4 – Happy Valued Cat (September 20-30)

This week we are focused on increasing your cat's happiness by creating an enriching environment for your feline to thrive in! Cats feel comfortable and safe in their homes when given opportunities to express their instincts as predators and explorers. Here are a few suggestions for you.

Outdoor Catio

A catio, an enclosed outdoor space for your cat, is an excellent way for your feline to spend time outdoors safely. All you need are screened walls around an area large enough for your cat to have room to play. Add some toys, a few non-toxic plants, and a scratching post to give your cat plenty of fun options to explore.

Indoor Hideout

Cats love their own quiet place to hide away in at times, preferably one where they will not be interrupted. If possible, re-purpose an extra room in your home and stock it with a scratching post, a comfortable place to nap and some cat toys. If space is an issue, find a tucked-away corner that does not get much foot traffic and add a cat condo supplemented with a plush cushion.

Climbing Spot

As predators, cats crave a climb or a jump to a high place so they can survey their surroundings safely and securely. A tall cat tree with a ledge and plenty of carpeting to work their claws is a tremendous healthy outlet for this behavior. If you do not have room for a cat tree, look around your place for a high shelf or the top of a bookcase you can clear off for your cat to use.
