Summer Safety for Pets: Heatstroke Prevention and Hot Weather Tips

As the warm Hawaiian summer sets in, our pets love spending more time outdoors, joining us for family adventures, beach walks, or even just lounging in the backyard. While the sunshine brings joy, it also brings hidden dangers for pets. At Pet Hospitals of Hawaii in Wahiawa, our team is here to help you keep your furry friends healthy, happy, and safe all summer long.

Understanding Heatstroke in Pets

Heatstroke is a life-threatening emergency that occurs when a pet’s body temperature rises above the safe range, usually from excessive exposure to heat and humidity. Dogs and cats don’t sweat like humans; they rely on panting and limited sweat glands in their paws to cool down. When these natural cooling methods aren’t enough, their risk of overheating increases.

Common Signs of Heatstroke in Pets

• Excessive panting or drooling

• Lethargy or weakness

• Bright red gums or tongue

• Vomiting or diarrhea

• Collapse or seizures

If you notice any of these symptoms, act quickly and seek immediate veterinary care.

Tips to Keep Pets Safe During the Summer

• Never Leave Pets in a Parked Car: Even with windows cracked, temperatures inside a car can skyrocket within minutes, posing fatal risks. If you’re running errands, it’s safest to leave your pet at home.

• Limit Exercise During Peak Heat: Plan walks and playtime for the cooler parts of the day - early morning or late evening. Always carry fresh water and let your pet rest in shaded areas.

• Provide Shade and Hydration: Make sure your pet always has access to clean, cool water and plenty of shade, whether they’re indoors or outside. Adding ice cubes to their water bowl can help them stay cool.

• Protect Paws from Hot Surfaces: Asphalt, sand, and concrete can become dangerously hot. Try walking on grass or using protective booties.

• Groom, But Don’t Shave: Regular grooming can help remove excess fur and prevent mats, which trap heat. However, avoid shaving your pet’s coat completely - fur acts as natural insulation against both heat and sunburn.

• Watch Out for Sunburn: Light-colored and short-haired pets are especially at risk for sunburn. Pet-safe sunscreens are available - ask your veterinarian for recommendations.

• Know Your Pet’s Risk Factors: Some breeds (like Bulldogs, Pugs, Shih Tzus, and Persian cats) are more susceptible to heatstroke due to their short noses. Senior pets, puppies, and those with chronic illnesses are also at higher risk.

What To Do If You Suspect Heatstroke

If you think your pet may be suffering from heatstroke, move them to a cool area right away. Offer small amounts of water and use cool (not cold) wet towels on their body. Contact your veterinarian immediately for further care.
