We are Celebrating Poi Dogs (Mutts) On National Mutt Day!

Today is July 31st, and we are celebrating poi dogs (mutts) as part of National Mutt Day! We are not surprised these unique pups are given a whole day to themselves. There is so much to love about a poi. Here are a few reasons why these dogs are so special and easy to love.

1. They Are Unique

Each poi is unique and different from other dogs, including the other puppies in the same litter. Each is a mix of different breeds with a one-of-a-kind look. When you tell people your dog is a spaniel-sheltie-poodle mix, they will not be able to picture your pup until you show them a photo. That makes each one special indeed.

2. They Are Easy to Adopt

Mutts are easier to adopt than purebred dogs because you do not need to spend time researching and looking for a breeder. One visit to an animal shelter or rescue yields several choices of poi dogs ready to go home with you. Select from a large or small dog, a puppy, or an adult, and a lively or calm mutt.

The shelter employee will ask you a few questions about what you are looking for and introduce you to a few that fit your list. You will know the right one for you when you see him or her. In addition, the adoption fee is much lower than what you would have paid a breeder, leaving you more cash to spend on dog toys and treats!

3. They Are Healthier Than Purebreds

Purebred pups share the same genetics and the same health problems. However, since poi dogs have a genetic mix, the dominant gene of one of their breeds could very well cancel out the recessive disorder of another. That has the potential to keep a mutt healthier and gifts them with the best traits of all their breeds.

4. They Are Generally Happy

A healthy pup is a happy pup who experiences fewer trips to the vet. Poi dogs have more time for play because they do not get entered into breed competitions or dog shows. That also means less time at the groomers and more time playing fetch with you in the backyard.

5. They Are Easier to Train

Poi dogs are easier to train because they have traits from several different breeds. They generally are not as set in their ways as purebreds, which helps them adjust to any type of household. This makes them a great family dog who will love romping with the kids in the daytime and curling up next to them at night.

6. They Have Lots of Personalities

Their genetic mix loads these pups with lots of personalities, and they usually aren't shy about showing them all off. So, yours could have the loyalty of a labrador, the courage of a German shepherd and the curiosity of a border collie.

7. They May Already Be Housetrained

Many poi dogs belonged to someone else who could not keep them for one reason or another. That means they often are already housetrained and may have a few tricks ready to show you from past training sessions.

8. They Are Fixed and Vaccinated

A mutt from the shelter already has a clean bill of health, is spayed or neutered and is current on vaccinations. That saves you the time and money of arranging appointments for these services later.

These eight reasons are just a few of the many that make mutts an awesome pet for any size household. These lovable dogs are famous for charming their way into human hearts with their unique looks and personalities. Join us in celebrating these mixed breed wonders on National Mutt Day.
